Located on the western edge of the Florida Panhandle, and on the border of Alabama, Walton County is adjacent to Holmes, Washington, Bay, and Okaloosa Counties. In an area, often called “LA,” short for lower Alabama, Walton County was originally established by Scots, migrating from the Carolinas. The county was formed in December of 1824 and named for George Walton, the Secretary of territorial Florida from 1821 to 1826. The first settlement of the county was in the Euchee Valley. Created in proximity to the Choctawhatchee River, the settlement was led by famed Yuchi Chief Sam Story. Famously, one of the first Presbyterian churches in Northwest Florida was created in Walton County. The parish and associated cemetery is still functional to this day.
The county covers a total area of 1,240 square miles, with almost 20 percent of the area water. The population of the county exceeds 50,000, and the largest city and county seat is Defuniak Springs. Aside from Defuniak Springs, the only incorporated city in the county is Freeport, and the only incorporated township is Paxton. The county encompasses portions of two national protected areas; Choctawhatchee National Forest, which was originally established by President Theodore Roosevelt, and Point Washington State Forest. The county has multiple historically significant landmarks. The Walton County Library, which is still in use, is the oldest extant library in the state. The first monument to Confederate army casualties in the state of Florida is located in DeFuniak Springs. Additionally, The Walton County Heritage Museum is situated at the once operational L&N railroad depot.

Veterans in Walton County
Walton County has a fairly small veteran population. Roughly 7,000 former military members make their primary residence in the county. The Veteran Services Office, located in Defuniak Springs represents the local populous of veterans, and their dependents and surviving spouses with claims filing for benefits in which they are entitled to. These benefits include education claims, burial claims, pension and compensation claims, and DD214 requests.
Disabled veterans, who own property in Walton County, are entitled to a property tax exemption if they have disability rating of ten percent or greater. The exemption amounts to $5,000. Veterans, who suffer from a complete disability, qualify for a full exemption.
Despite the limited number of military residents, Walton County has a long history of patriotism and unwavering support for the Armed Forces. This attitude is on display at Blue Creek Veterans Memorial Park in Defuniak Springs. The park has a monument honoring natives of Walton County, who have served.
