Created in 1821, St. Johns County is one of the original counties of Florida. The county is named after the St. Johns River, the longest river in Florida. St. Johns is made up of 822 square miles of total area; 27 percent, of which, is water. The residential population of St. Johns County is in excess of 210,000. The largest community is Ponte Vedra Beach, and the county seat is St. Augustine. The county has two institutions of higher education; St Johns River State College and Flagler College. The county is primarily a bedroom community, meaning that few residents work and live within it. The majority of occupants commute to nearby Jacksonville for work. Littered with shops, art galleries and restaurants, St. Augustine is regarded for its old world feel and romantic charm.

Located in St. Augustine, the St. Johns County Veterans Services Office assists veterans, surviving spouse, and their dependents with benefits counseling and applications. St. Johns County honors the sacrifice of veterans throughout the history of this country with the 50 acre Veterans Park. The park contains six multi-purpose lighted fields, four basketball courts, a skate park, picnic areas, playground and Dog Park. Perhaps the centerpiece of the park is Veterans Memorial Monument, which pays tribute to every branch of the Armed Forces.
The Florida National Guard is headquartered in the county seat of St. Augustine.
Disabled veterans who own homes in St. Johns County are entitled to a $5,000 property tax exemption if they have a disability rating of ten percent or more. Veterans with a rating of 100 percent qualify for a complete exemption.
