Originally governed by Hillsborough County and Manatee County, when Florida was first admitted into the country as a state, Sarasota County was created as its own entity in May of 1921. Located on the lower western coast of the state, Sarasota County has subtropical weather. The climate is humid, categorized by hot summers, warm winters and year round atmospheric moisture. The county has distinct dry and rainy seasons. The wet season typically lasts from June through September, with the dry season occurring from October through May. The County has a population exceeding 53,000.
Because the County is located along the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico, it has a human history that dates back almost 15,000 years. The original inhabitants of the county were hunter-gatherers, who were dependent upon the water sources provided by the Deep Springs, catchment basins and Warm Mineral Springs close to Sarasota. The first Europeans, to explore the area, were Spaniards in the early sixteenth century. American development in the County began in 1840 with the development of Fort Armistead. Although it is unknown why the area was originally named Sarasota, it is believed to be the namesake of Hernando de Soto’s daughter Sara. The name first appeared in 1763 as Zarazote on a land grant map.
The largest city in the county is North Point, with the county seat of Sarasota being the most recognizable nationally. Sarasota City is the site of frequent art shows, the Ringling Museum of Art, and the Selby Botanical Gardens. A winner of the “world’s finest, the whitest sand”, the beaches are beautiful and draw countless tourists annually. The Major League Baseball Baltimore Orioles conduct their yearly spring training at Ed Smith Stadium.

Sarasota has a fairly sizeable veteran population of nearly 38,000 residents. The Veteran Services Office of Sarasota County provides the local populous of former military members with claims and filing assistance. Among the benefits that the department helps veterans attain death benefits, survivor benefits, pension for wartime veterans with non-service related disabilities, medical benefits, and compensation for service-related disabilities.
The Sarasota Vet Center functions as a readjustment counseling facility. The center holds office hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center specializes in aiding veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and bridging the gap between active duty and civilian life.
The Sarasota Community Based Outpatient Clinic serves local veterans with health and wellness care. Services available at the Sarasota CBOC include primary care, mental health care, women’s health care, audiology, EKG, outpatient surgical procedures, blood, and lab work, social work, and pharmaceutical consultation. Patients in need of specialty care not offered at the outpatient clinic are given referrals to the Bay Pines VA Medical Center in Pinellas County.
Disabled veterans, who own property in Sarasota County, qualify for a property tax exemption if they have a disability rating of ten percent or greater. The exemption amounts to $5,000. Veterans with a complete disability qualify for a total exemption.
