Located in the Tampa statistical metropolitan area, Pinellas County is one of the largest counties by population in the state of Florida. Nearly a million people live in the county. Established in 1912, the county has been influenced historically by the Tocobaga Indians, and the Spanish and British explorers who first settled the county. The county is named from the Spanish phrase Punta Pinal which translates to Point of Pines. Because of its humid subtropical climate an interesting variety of plant and animal life is found throughout the county. The microclimates of the St Petersburg Bay cultivate the growth of coconut, palms and fruit trees. Among the animal species native to Pinellas are White-tailed deer, sea turtles, manatees and stingrays
The county seat is Clearwater and the largest and most notable city is St. Petersburg. The county is home to Eckerd College, Stetson University College of Law, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and Clearwater Christian College. The Pinellas Public Library Cooperative has 15 branches, and cultural offerings include the Salvador Dali Museum and Florida Holocaust Museum. The Philadelphia Phillies and the Toronto Blue Jays conduct their spring training in the county and the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League and the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball play home games in St Petersburg.
Nicknamed the Sunshine City, St. Petersburg has an average of 361 sunny days a year, with a motto “it’s always in season.” The city was named by American Style Magazine as the best mid size American city of 2011, largely because of its vibrant art scene.

Opened officially in 1933, The Bay Pines National Cemetery is thought to have a functioning burial ground for United States military personnel during The Indian Wars. Located nine miles outside of St. Petersburg, the cemetery was officially opened to accommodate the families of those who died at nearby hospitals. The Veterans Administration took over ownership in 1984. Made out of pink Etowah marble the monument at the main entrance serves as a reminder of those who honorably served their country. At the opposite entrance, a similar reminder sits in the form of a polished granite bench. The care, the county puts into maintaining and operating Bay Pines, is reflective of the overwhelmingly positive relationship Pinellas has with its veteran and active duty population.
Over 83,000 veterans live in Pinellas County. This populous has access to a ranging number of services provided by The Department of Veterans Affairs. The St. Petersburg Regional Benefit Office helps veterans apply for benefits and offers entitlement education. The office works with almost two million veterans in the state of Florida. The county is home to a vet center in St. Petersburg. This facility operates as a readjustment center, providing a range of counseling services.
There are two VA health care facilities in the county: The St. Petersburg Community Based Outpatient Clinic and the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center in Bay Pines. Both facilities provide a number of health and wellness services. The outpatient clinic offers primary care, mental health care, lab work, women’s health care, social work and pharmaceutical consultation. Patients needing health care not provided at the clinic are referred to the medical center in Bay Pines. The center has a comprehensive list of services including cardiology, surgical services, radiation oncology and spinal cord rehab and care.
In addition to the large veteran population in the county, an active duty contingent is noticeable with Air Station Clearwater operational. The largest and busiest Coast Guard Air Station, 600 USCG aviation and support personnel work out of the base. Nine Jayhawk helicopters and six Hercules aircraft are assigned to the facility. The base plays a role in joint DEA and ICE anti-drug smuggling and migrant operations.
Disabled veteran homeowners in Pinellas County are eligible for a property tax exemption of $5,000 if they have a disability rating of ten percent or higher. Veterans with a total disability qualify for a full exemption.
