A Confederate Army soldier, Harvard graduate, school principal, prominent lawyer, speaker of the state and Democratic Senator, Samuel Pasco made numerous imprints on Florida. Perhaps the largest mark Pasco left on the state was his presidency of the Constitutional Convention of 1885, which authored an updated constitution for Florida. Two years later Pasco was elected to the United States Senate, during the same year Hernando County was broken apart to form Samuels’s namesake: Pasco County. Located along the state’s western coast, Pasco County covers a total of 868 square miles, 122 of which is water. Pasco County has a large population with almost 500,000 residents. The largest city is New Port Richey, and the county seat is Dade City.
Residents of Pasco County are fairly split politically. However, the county has voted majority Republican in the previous three presidential elections. Five institutions of higher learning are located within the boundaries of the county, perhaps most notably Saint Leo University. Several parks and recreation areas are spread throughout Pasco County including Hudson Beach, The New Port Richey Aquatic Center, Veterans Memorial Park and the Jay Starkey Preserve. The most popular outdoor activities among residents are canoeing, sailing, jet skiing, power boating, kayaking, and fishing.
West Pasco is largely a resort and retirement area. A suburb of Tampa, the economy of the western portion of the county is largely rooted in commercial fishing. In recent years, East Pasco has undergone a transformation from forested, agricultural area to suburban development. Both the U.S. 275 and the Sun Coast Highway travel through Pasco County.

Veterans in Pasco County
Pasco County has the eighth largest veteran population in the state, with 50,000 veterans residing in the county. The Veterans Services Office in Port Richey works as an advocate for local veterans and their families. The staff provides claims and benefits assistance to veterans who have earned entitlements through their military service. The office also works to assist veterans with benefits appeals, military records searches and applications for state-run veterans’ nursing homes.
For veterans struggling with readjusting to civilian life, the Pasco County Vet Center in New Port Richey offers counseling. The center has hours Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Wednesday and Thursday hours, are extended to 7:30 p.m.
The New Port Richey Outpatient Clinic offers primary care medical services to veterans who live in Pasco, and Hernando Counties and the Northern Pinellas area. Open Monday through Friday, the clinic has a referral service to the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa for patients whose needs extend beyond its capability. Areas of healthcare provided at the clinic include podiatry, radiology, lab work, nutritional counseling, pharmaceutical, and minor surgery. Mental health care is also provided with social work, smoking cessation and counseling services available.
Disabled veterans, who own property in Pasco County, are entitled to a property tax exemption of $5,000 if they have a service-related disability rating of ten percent or higher. Veterans with a complete disability (100 percent rating) qualify for a full property tax exemption.
