Located in East Central Florida, Orange County is largely known for its county seat and largest city Orlando. Originally created in 1845, the county was previously known as Mosquito County, but was renamed because of the surplus of fruit that made up the main product of the county when Florida entered the Union as a state. At the time, Mosquito County contained most of the land of Central Florida. The county was carved into Osceola, Seminole, Lake, and Volusia Counties. Orange County was part of the first land mass to spring up from the Oligocene Sea millions of years ago. Because of this the county has several paleontological sites. The Red Spring area is a Pleistocene fossil-bearing area, and excavations have produced the remains of a giant sloth, mammoth, camel and dire wolf. Interestingly, in the 1980s the majority of orange groves in the county were destroyed by multiple harsh winters, culminating in January of 1985, with the coldest temperatures the region had experienced in 100 years.
A total of 1,003 square miles falls within the boundaries of Orange County. One of the larger counties by population, 1,225,267 residents makes the county their home. A pivotal swing county in during national elections, the voting corridor Orange County belongs to is often mentioned by the media during presidential elections. The county is fairly split Democrat and Republican and has voted both ways. In 2004, John Kerry received 49.83 percent of the counties vote while George W Bush took 49.62 percent of it.
Orlando is a huge tourist draw as the site of several iconic theme parks. Annual estimates put the number of tourists in Orlando at 52 million. Local theme parks include Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Adventure Park, Discovery Cove and Gatorland. The city is also home to several parks and gardens, numerous museums and cultural offerings and professional basketball and hockey teams. Institutions of higher learning in Orange County include the University of Central Florida, Florida A&M University College of Law, Valencia College, and Rollins College.

Veterans in Orange County
With almost 70,000 veterans living in Orange County and an operational military base in Orlando, the county is incredibly military friendly. The Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division presently has 120 active duty service-members, 3,200 joint service reserves, 2,200 civil service personnel and 1,000 sciences contributing to its operation. The facility has two chief purposes, to train for air warfare as well as developing training systems for undersea and surface military functions.
Former military members, who reside in Orange County, have access to a multitude of veterans’ services. The Office of Veterans Services in Orange County provides free referrals and benefits counseling. The Orlando Vet Center acts as a readjustment counseling center.
There are multiple VA health care providers in the city of Orlando. The Orlando VA Medical Center serves more than 90,000 patients in the East Central Florida area. The center encompasses a Community Living Center, Residential Rehabilitation Program, the Viera Outpatient Clinic, the Daytona Outpatient Clinic, and four Community-Based Outpatient Clinics located in Clermont, Kissimmee, Leesburg, and Orange City. The Orlando VA Medical Center has a mission statement of enhancing the lives of veterans through exemplary health care that improves well-being. The healthcare provided is encompassing and includes cardiology, primary care, dental, nutrition, neurology, podiatry, social work, and prosthetics.
Veterans who own homes in Orange County potentially qualify for a property tax exemption. If a veteran has sustained a service-related injury that caused, a disability rated at 10 percent or higher an exemption amounting to $5,000 is accessible. Veterans, who are 100 percent, disabled qualify for a total exemption.
