Nome Census Area, Alaska VA Real Estate & Property Information

Nome Census Area, Alaska homes for sale2021 $0 down, VA home loan limit for Nome Area is $822,375.

Located in western Alaska, as a portion of the Unorganized Borough, the Nome Census Area is known for its sub-arctic climate. The name derives from the Nome Valley in town founder Jafet Lindberg’s native Norway. Lindberg alongside Swedes Erik Lindbloom and John Brynteson found gold in Nome along Anvil Creek. News of the discovery traveled fast and within two years the area became a hotbed for prospectors and others in search of fortune, growing to a population of 10,000. Many more migrated to the area when gold was found in the sand of the local beaches. At one point, the area averaged 1000 new residents a day. At one point, Nome was the largest city in the territory of Alaska. When Gold began to dry up, harsh winters drove many away. In the 1930’s, the population dipped below 1,500. The establishment of the placer mine, plus the garrison of military personnel helped boost the economy which brought about another period of sustained population growth.

Adjacent to Northwest Arctic Borough, Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area and Wade Hampton Census Area, the Nome Census Area currently has a population of 9,892. Approximately 622 veterans live in Nome. The population is 75 percent Native American, with many residents speaking Yupik at home. The area has the distinction of having 118 males per every 100 females.

The median household income is $51,472, and the median home value is $135,500.

Tourists enjoy visiting the Carrie M McLain Memorial Museum, Nome’s only museum, to learn about the area’s history of the gold rush in 1898, natives, and dog sledding. Also, visits to the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve expose tourists to fun outdoor adventuring and wildlife viewing.

Disabled veteran homeowners are eligible for a property tax exemption of up to the first $150,000 of assessed property value; this is contingent on net income and disability rating. Information on qualifying can be attained via the Alaska Department of Military & Veterans Affairs.
