Located on the southern tip of the state of Florida Monroe County has a history that dates back long before European exploration. During Pre-Columbian times, the area was inhabited by the indigenous Calusa People. Juan Ponce De Leon was the first European to traverse the county, and it was established as a Spanish territory in the early sixteenth century. The largest city and council seat of Monroe County, Key West was originally called Cayo Hueso by Spanish settlers, meaning bone cay. The origin of this term is said to relate to the Calusa, who used the island as a communal gravesite. Monroe County was established as an American county in July of 1823. The region is named for the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe.
Monroe County has a population of roughly 75,000. The area is spread across 3,738 square miles. Almost 100 percent of residents in the county live in the Florida Keys island chain. 66 percent of the county land area is nationally protected because of the presence of the Everglades National Park. In total, Monroe County has 17 national protected areas. These include four wildlife refuges, ten state parks, preserve and historic site.
The most widely known incorporated area in Monroe County is Key West. The city is considered the southernmost city in the continental United States. Because of its closeness to the Gulf Stream and the Gulf of Mexico the climate of Key West is mild and semi-tropical. The city is only in the country to not receive frost throughout the year. Key West is fairly dissimilar from other nearby cities, boasting the unofficial slogan “we are not Miami.” The city has several museums, unique shopping options, culinary hot spots and outdoor activities.

Monroe County has a veteran population of 7,700. The County maintains three Veterans Affairs Department offices, all in the Keys. These offices guide veterans and active duty service members access the federal benefits that they are entitled to. Among these entitlements are transportation to the Miami VA Medical Center, burial allowances, and benefits for surviving spouses, educational benefits, insurance claims and appeals of social security. The Veterans Affairs Department has a mission of enhancing the quality of life for veterans, surviving spouses and dependents through claims, benefits, and entitlement guidance. Additional help with claims can be received at the Key West Coast and NAS Key West, both of which operate as intake sites for pre-discharge claims assistance. The Key Largo Vet Center Outstation serves as a readjustment counseling center. This site holds hours Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Veterans and active military members are provided with health and wellness services at the VA outpatient clinics in Key West and Key Largo. The Key Largo Community Based Outpatient Clinic offers primary care, immunizations high blood pressure treatment, lab work, and psychiatric services. In order to schedule an appointment at this clinic, pre-registration with the Miami VA Healthcare System must take place. The Key West VA Outpatient Clinic offers the same services, however unlike Key Largo this site has pharmaceutical services because the naval pharmacy is next door to the clinic. Pre-registration at this clinic can be done in person.
Nearly 2,000 active-duty personnel, 2,500 military family members, and less than 100 naval reserves live in Key West, as a result of the operational military base Naval Air Station Key West. This base has a national security mission that places emphasis on the operational readiness for the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, National Guard, and other federal agencies. The station is equipped with aerial training ranges and a Tactical Combat Training System. The Navy has maintained a presence in Key West since the early 1800s. Today the base is home to Fighter Squadron Composite 111, Strike Fighter Squadron 106, Joint Interagency Task Force South, Army Special Forces Under Water Operations School and U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West.
Veterans, who own property in Monroe County, qualify for a property tax exemption if they have received a disability rating of 10 percent or higher. Under this circumstance, the exemption amounts to $5,000. Veterans with a 100 percent rating are entitled to a full property tax exemption.
