With a population of 190,000, Litchfield County has the smallest population density of any county in Connecticut. Despite the relatively small populous, the county has a total area of 945 square miles, making it the largest county geographically in the state. Established in 1751 by the Connecticut General Court, the land in the county originally belonged to Fairfield, New Haven and Hartford Counties. Over the nearly 30 years between 1780 and 1807 the boundaries of the county were significantly altered with land swaps and added towns. The final change to the county layout occurred in 1807 with the inclusion of the town of Middlebury. Litchfield County received a certain degree of notoriety during the civil war when the 2nd Connecticut Regiment of Volunteers Heavy Artillery of Litchfield was tasked with providing defense of Washington D.C.
Located in the northwestern portion of the state, Litchfield County is within three hours of both Boston and New York City. The County offers residents several fun-filled amenities. The largest and most active city in the county is Torrington. Future downtown redevelopment plans are in the implementation stage. These enhancements are expected to increase cultural and shopping opportunities. The restoration of Coe Memorial Park has already been completed. This park is a Victorian walking park, first built in 1906. Renovations featured the construction of new sidewalks and paths. Memorials and monuments were built, and the Botanical Gardens are now one of the bigger tourist attractions in the county. Residents of the area love the Main Street Marketplace during the summer months. This market has over 40 exhibitors, 20 food vendors and a multitude of performers. Since 2009, the marketplace has averaged over 3,000 attendants a night. Furthering the counties designation as a summertime paradise is the Torrington Titans. A baseball team that competes in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Additionally Torrington has multiple hiking trails and two public golf courses.
