Located in Southwest Florida, Lee County was established in 1887. Named for Civil War Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee, the land of the county was originally part of Monroe County. Covering more than 1,200 square miles of area, the coastal county is made up by 428 square miles of water. Featuring a year-round climate, the weather is monsoon-influenced and hinges between subtropical and tropical. The largest city in the county is Cape Coral, and the county seat is Fort Myers. Lee County has a residential population that exceeds 600,000. A nationally known winter resort region, the history of the American history of the county dates back to 1866, when the first Americans began settling the area. Hostilities between Americans and Seminole Indians led to the construction of Fort Myers. The fort was operational through the Civil War and was the site of an engagement between the Union and Confederate Armies. The county underwent a real estate boom in the 1920s with the construction of the Tamiami Trail Bridge and the Royal Palm Hotel.
