Located right off of the Florida Panhandle, towards the northern center of the state, Lafayette County was established in 1856. The area of the county was originally part of Madison County. The county was named for Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who aided the American cause during the Revolutionary War. The Suwannee River makes up the entire eastern boundary of the county. The county extends for 548 square miles and is adjacent to Madison County, Taylor County, Dixie County, Gilchrist County and Suwannee County. The population of Lafayette County is just over 7,000. Mayo is the county seat and only municipality in the entire county. The county has several historic sites including the Hal W Adams Bridge, Old Lafayette County Courthouse, Old Mayo Free Press Building and the House of Seven Gables. The county has two prominent parks, the Lafayette Blue Springs State Park, and Troy Springs State Park. Interestingly, the spring’s area at Troy contains the sunken Confederate steamship Madison. Lafayette County is a dry county, meaning that the sale of alcohol is prohibited within county limits.

Although Lafayette County has one of the smaller population densities in the state, it does maintain a veteran populous. Approximately 800 former military members make the county their home. This segment of the population can receive benefits counseling and referral services from the Lafayette County Veterans Service Office. The department only holds office hours on Wednesdays. The county does not have an active military base or a VA medical facility or center. An American Legion Post can be found in adjacent Suwannee County.
