About Kodiak Island Borough

Kodiak Island Borough va homesFor 7,000 years, the Alutiiq people have lived in Kodiak Island Borough Alaska. A richly unique culture known for its masked dances and celebrations, rooted in the belief that communication with animal spirits and natural forces was possible, the Alutiiq once numbered as many as 13,000. The eighteenth and nineteenth century are known today as a dark chapter in Alutiiq history. With the incursion of Russian fur trading companies, many Alutiiq died in cold blood, while others were subjected to devastating diseases like small pox. In 1867, the arrival of American and Scandinavian traders and the sale of Alaska from Russia to the United States improved the Alutiiq quality of life, at least in comparison to the previous regime. Commercial fishing, mining and fox farming were established as prosperous industries. Today, the Alutiiq population has been reduced to around 4,000.
