Established in 1848, Holmes County is situated on the Florida Panhandle. With a total area of 479 square miles of land and 10 square miles of water, Holmes is the fifth smallest county by size in the state; The County is home to 19,927 residents. The name of the county has been the cause of periodic miniature controversy with debate regarding the true etymology of the name Holmes. Some sources claim the county is named for Holmes Creek on the boundary of its eastern border; others attribute it to settler Thomas J. Holmes; perhaps the most popular of the folklores surrounding the name concerns a Half American, Half Creek Indian chief named Holmes who was killed by a raiding party under the command of Andrew Jackson during the first Seminole War. The county seat and largest city of Holmes is Bonifay. Four public schools are found in the city. The county has three sites that show up on the national register of historic places, the Keith Cabin in Pittman, The Waits Mansion in Bonifay and Vortex Spring in Northern Ponce De Leon. In the unincorporated community of Bethlehem, the WTVY-TV-Tower is located; this tower is the tallest structure in the state and one of the highest in the entire country.
