Adjacent to Bay County, Franklin County, Calhoun County and Liberty County, Gulf County is situated in the Florida Panhandle. Made up of 756 square miles, the county is home to 15,863 residents. Gulf County has a population density of 28 inhabitants per square mile. A part of the Panama City Metropolitan area. Although the county was not founded until 1925, it was the site of the original Florida Constitutional Convention. Wewahitchka, for water eyes, was the original county seat, known for the 1927 Gulf County Courthouse, which is still functional today. Wewahitchka is the home of the largest beekeeping site in the state and is the producer of Tupelo Honey. Interestingly, the current county seat of Port St. Joe was founded in 1835 and largely vacated by 1841 via yellow fever and ravaging hurricanes. With the establishment of the Apalachicola Northern Railroad in 1909, the settlement was informally re-founded.
The St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge falls within the limits of the county. The protected refuge is a member of the American red wolf recovery program.
A political anomaly, the county votes heavily Democratic locally, however leans Republican statewide and nationally. The median household income of the county is $30,276. The average home vale in the area is $126,600. In 2013, the home appreciation in the area was 3.3 percent. With the cost of living eight percent lower than the U.S. average, Gulf County is an affordable place to call home. Recently, job growth has been positive, over recent years available jobs have increased by greater than a full percentage point.
