About Covington County
Covington County, Alabama founded in 1821, is located in the southernmost part of the state. The county was named after General Leonard Covington.
Most of the Conecuh National Forest is in Covington County. The county is 1,038 square miles. W.F. Jackson State Park is also in the county. For those who like fishing, Gantt Lake has bass, bluegill, crappie, and red-ear sunfish.
In the 1800s, the economy prospered from corn and cotton. The focus then turned to the county’s large amounts of timber as well as textile mills. Residents today mainly work in manufacturing, educational services, and health care.
The town of Opp hosts an antiques and arts festival each year called Oppfest.
