An avid fisherman, Barron Collier seemed destined to do battle with the Blackfin Tuna, Cobia, Mahi and Flounder found in the waters of Florida. An advertising extraordinaire and real estate developer, Collier County was named in the honor of Barron Collier after he financed the construction of the Tamiami Trail, the southernmost portion of highway 41 connecting Tampa and Miami and extending the road from Naples through the Everglades National Park. Following the roads construction, Collier famously quipped “When I first came here on holiday with Juliet, I never expected that I would buy a whole region of it, nor did I expect to pay for the new Tamiami Trail, or half the things I’ve done. But I really didn’t expect to have a whole county named after me.”
Established in 1923 from a portion of Lee County, the area has a robust population of 321,520. Since the year 2000, the total number of residents has expanded by 28 percent. Known for its diversity, 35 percent of inhabitants are registered as non-White. Because of the large Hispanic population, an estimated 20 percent of inhabitants are bilingual, Spanish speaking.
Because the county holds the Everglades National Park, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, and Big Cypress National Preserve, tourism is the main force behind the local economy. A hotbed for eco-tourists, Everglades National Park, the biggest wilderness area by mass east of the Mississippi River and the third biggest in the entire county draws a million visitors yearly.
Viewed as a resort town county, Collier has an attractive setting with many gorgeous beaches, shopping areas, golf courses, developing golf courses and parks. Because of the number of amenities, the county is part of the most expensive metro area in the state. The cost of living in Collier County is 15 percent higher than the national average. Despite the expense associated with living in the county, residents enjoy an unemployment rate nearly two percentage points below the national average and a job growth of 5.6 percent.
