If not for a bout with typhoid fever, James Baker may never have re-located to Northern Florida from North Carolina. Had Baker not sought out a warmer climate, the Town of Alligator Lake may never have been changed to Lake City. Elected as the state attorney in 1852 and the 4th Judicial District State Judge in 1859, his popularity resulted in the 1861 naming of Baker County in his honor. Originally, people were drawn to the area by the logging and turpentine industries. As the population of the area expanded, the adjacent five counties war re-partitioned to include the 585 square miles of land that now make up Baker County.
Proudly boasting the official county slogan of “The small county with big ideas atop the Florida Crown Crossroads. Today, the county is home to 27,115 residents. Made up by County Seat Macclenny and the township of Glen St. Mary, the county also encompasses five unincorporated areas (Taylor, Olustee, Sanderson, Baxter and Eddy). With agricultural and farming roots, the county originally exported large quantities of corn, sweet potatoes, green vegetables, sugar cane and cotton. Today, the economy is driven by the agro-nursery business.
Including the nationally protected Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge and the Osceola National Forest, federal lands make up the majority of the northern portion of the county.
The median household income for the county is $40,035, and the median listed home price is $150,000.
