The Unanga people, who are native to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska are thought to have settled the area of Aleutians East Borough as far back as the most recent ice age. It was not until the eighteenth century with the influx of Russian fur traders that the Aleut people had contact with Europeans. In the early 1900’s Scandinavians and other Europeans flocked to the area because of the abundance of commercial fishing opportunities. The islands, which are located on the most western portion of the Alaskan Peninsula, were a vital territory during World War II. Because of their location, the islands provided strategic benefit to whoever occupied them as a trade route into the pacific. From 1942-1943 Japanese forces took control of the island, until a joint Canadian/American force expelled them.
