The Unanga people, who are native to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska are thought to have settled the area of Aleutians East Borough as far back as the most recent ice age. It was not until the eighteenth century with the influx of Russian fur traders that the Aleut people had contact with Europeans. In the early 1900’s Scandinavians and other Europeans flocked to the area because of the abundance of commercial fishing opportunities. The islands, which are located on the most western portion of the Alaskan Peninsula, were a vital territory during World War II. From 1942-1943 Japanese forces took control of the island, until a joint Canadian/American force expelled them.

The climate of the area is variable with temperatures ranging from below 0 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Annually, the borough experiences 33 inches of precipitation and 52 inches of snowfall.

The local economy remains based in fish processing and commercial fishing. Over 200 residents possess commercial fishing permits. Peter Pan Seafoods, Trident Seafoods and Bering Pacific are all home to fish processing operations.

Places to visit in Aleutians East listed on the National Register of Historic Places include St. Nicholas Chapel, St. Alexander Nevsky Chapel, Port Moller Hot Springs Villag, and the Holy Resurrection Church. In Cold Bay, there is the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge, where you can watch birds, bears, harbor seals, sea lions, and sea otters in their natural habitat.
