About Wrangell
The Tlingit people, a matrilineal tribe with a historic reach stretching between Alaska and British Columbia, have lived in Wrangell Borough for thousands of years. Known for their identifying crests (Raven and Eagle) and the artistry of their totem poles, the Tlingit began trading furs with Russian explorers as early as 1811. Wrangell was established by Russia in 1834, making it one of the original Russian designated areas in the state.
Following the Alaska Purchase, the United States Government built Fort Wrangell, which operated from 1868 to 1877. The fort, as well as the area gold rush, acted as catalysts for borough migration.
Wrangell, previously a city in the Petersburg census area, was not incorporated as a borough until 2008. It is located in the Alaska Panhandle and has an area of 2,541 sq. mi.
Wrangell is an excellent place for those who love fishing. Many different kinds of salmon, bottom fish, and halibut can be found in the waters surrounding Wrangell. Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park is a must see with over 40 historic rock carvings along the beach. Other places to visit include Mt. Dewey Trail and the Stikine River. The Tongass National Forest, South Etolin Wilderness and Stikine-LeConte Wilderness are all national protected areas that fall within the borders of Wrangell.

The total population is about 2,400 with approximately 344 veterans living there. The median household income is $47,348, and the median home value is $163,200.
