Known as the “Peanut Capital,” Worth County has a great climate, friendly community, and scenic countryside. Worth County is located in Southern Georgia and was named after Major General William J. Worth. The county was officially created by the Georgia General Assembly from portions of Tift and Turner counties on December 20, 1853. Encompassing a total area of 575 square miles, Worth County is made up of 571 miles of land and 4.1 miles of water. The Flint, Ochlocknee, and Suwannee Rivers can all be found in Worth County. The total population is 20,940, including a veteran population of 1,811.
Avid hunters need to be sure to visit the Southern Woods Plantation. With picturesque views and an abundance of game birds to hunt, the Southern Woods Plantation is the perfect place for a weekend hunting trip. Visitors to the Plantation can choose from a variety of packages that include refreshments, lunch, and extra ammo. Bird dogs are also available for rental. The Southern Woods Plantation is also a great venue for weddings, receptions, and corporate events.
There are several locations worth visiting in Worth County for history buffs. The Sylvester Local News Building is the oldest business in Worth County. Sylvester Local News was established in 1884. The actual building was built in the late 1920s and has stood in the town of Sylvester ever since. Other historical locations in Worth County include the Poulan Public Library and “Ole Engine 100.”
There are many public parks in Worth County that are all great places to spend a day outdoors. The parks contain walking and jogging trails, covered pavilions, amphitheatres, and more! The amphitheatres host many events over the summer and spring months. For a picnic with friends or family, be sure to take advantage of one of the many picnic shelters in all of the parks. Most of the parks in Worth County feature playgrounds and baseball fields for team sports.
You will never get bored in Worth County thanks to the many festivals and events held throughout the year. The Sumner Egg Festival has events for people of all ages. The Egg Festival features arts and crafts, delicious food, and even a parade! Events held during the Sumner Egg Festival include the Southern Gun Slingers, Slowest Tractor Race, and Fastest Lawn Mower Race. Other events held in Worth County include the GA Peanut Festival, 100 Mile Peanut Pickin Yard Sale, and City of Sylvester Christmas Parade.
