Just as much of Nevada conjures up differing opinions from outsiders, White Pine County was founded in controversy. Named after the beautiful hardwood trees found throughout the region, settlers debated between calling the county White Pine or Ruby. Those responsible opted for White Pine, favoring a name that suggested people rush to the area for mining purposes (as in “Rush to White Pine”), in search of silver ore. The heavy tree growth in White Pine originally thought to be white pine trees have since been discovered as limber pines, in fact there are no white pines in the entire county.

White Pine was established by the splitting of Lander County in 1869. Similar to most of the region and surrounding areas, the county became popular as a gold and silver mining area during the early 1800s.

A relatively large portion of the county is made up of water, allowing for agricultural opportunities not accessible to the majority of counties in Nevada. White Pine County is perhaps most famous for being the home of the Great Basin National Park. The parks popularity is largely rooted in its reputation among professional climbers as well as amateur hikers. Outdoor enthusiasts point to the plentiful trails and beautiful views when discussing the appeal of the Great Basin National Park.

The region extends to the Utah border and officially became a United States National Park and protected region in 1986.
