About Washington County

Established in 1843, Washington County, Oregon was originally named Tuality District and was one of the original four districts in the state. However, in 1849 the Territorial Legislature changed the name to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States. In addition, in 1850 the town of Columbia was selected as the county seat and would later have its name changed to Hillsboro in 1858.

Today, the county is home to seven school districts that provide education to students ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade in high school. In addition, the county is also home to Pacific University, a private University which offers four-year bachelor’s degrees and certifications, as well as several master’s degree programs.

In addition to its educational opportunities and workforce, the county is also home to several cultural and artistic institutions. These include the Venetian Theatre, the Hillsboro Symphony Orchestra, and the Hillsboro Artists’ Regional Theatre as well as the Glenn & Viola Cultural Arts Center. 

Finally, there are several parks for people who enjoy the outdoors like Scoggins Valley Park, Metzger Park, and Eagle Landing Park. Furthermore, the county is also host to several annual events from its 4th of July Parade, the Oregon International Air Show, and the Washington County Fair.
