About Wasco County

Wasco County, Oregon was named after the Wascopam Tribe who lived in the area for hundreds of years before European arrival, the county was established in 1854 from parts of Clackamas, Lane, Linn, and Marion Counties. In addition, at the time of the county’s establishment, the county seat was also established in the town of The Dalles, which was already known as the end of the Oregon Trail and an important trading hub for early inhabitants of the area.

Today, The Dalles still serves as the trading hub of north-central Oregon with the most important industries in the counties being agriculture, lumber, transportation, and tourism. Moreover, the county’s biggest employment industries are healthcare, retail trade, and agriculture/ forestry.

In addition to its existing industries, the county is also home to the Wasco County Economic Development Commission which focuses on supporting the economic development of the county. It achieves this goal by collaborating and providing technical assistance to growing businesses, and by addressing the needs throughout the county.

When it comes to education, the county is served by three school districts that have thirteen K-12 schools in total. In addition, the county is home to Columbia Gorge Community College which offers two-year associate degree and certification programs.

In addition,, the county is also home to several historical and cultural institutions. For example, the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum, the Fort Dalles Museum, and the Pulpit Rock which was used by Methodist missionaries to preach to the Indians, all serve to display and understand the county’s history.

Finally, leisure and recreation are also available within the county with W.E. Hunt Park which provides a picturesque park where several amenities are offered. These include camping locations, picnic tables, and a 25-acre open field for group activities. Furthermore, the Wasco County Fairgrounds are located right next to the park and allow for up to 1,000 people to camp overnight.
