Archaeological estimates put the first human activity in Sussex County between 10,000 and 14,000 years ago. The original inhabitants were members of the Algonquin Nation, most notably the Leni Lenape and the Nanticoke. The most southern county in Delaware, indigenous tribes settled in the areas surrounding the local bodies of water; harvesting oysters, fish and shellfish. European exploration of the Sussex County area occurred in the early 1600’s. The first Europeans in the area were Dutch and English. The Zwaanendael trading post in Sussex County in the land that is now the city of Lewes was the first European settlement in the state. The original Dutch settlers were forced out by Great Brittan during a series of conflicts known as the Anglo-Dutch Wars. Historically significant in U.S. history, Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution.
Today, Sussex County has a population of nearly 200,000. The county seat is Georgetown, and the largest city is Seaford. Dissimilar from New Castle County, Sussex falls more on the conservative end of the spectrum politically. The county has traditionally been the Republican stronghold of Delaware. The economy is rooted in agriculture. No American county produces more poultry than Sussex County. Additionally, the area has a large tourism industry. The beaches of the county generate nearly $seven billion annually.
