Named after soldier in the Revolutionary War, General Thomas Sumter, Sumter County is located in south-central Georgia. The county was made from a portion of Lee County and was officially created by the Georgia General Assembly on December 26, 1831. Rich in history, Sumter County is the home of many historical sites. Sumter County has a strong educational system and medical system. There are several higher education institutes in Sumter for veterans looking to continue their education. Lake Blackshear can be found in Sumter County. This manmade lake is excellent for those who love swimming, fishing, boating, and any other aquatic activities. Once a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp, the Andersonville National Historic Site houses the graves of many Union soldiers. In fact, 13,714 graves of Union soldiers can be found on the grounds. History buffs will enjoy the amount of information on the former prison camp that can be found at the Andersonville National Historic Site.
Another historical site in Sumter County is the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. The site preserves locations associated with the 39th President, Jimmy Carter Jr. Some of the locations included in the Jimmy Carter Nation Historic Site are his former home, farm, and school. There is also a museum on site for even more information on Jimmy Carter’s past. Other historical sites in Sumter County include Liberty Hall, Dismuke Smokehouse, and New Corinth Baptist Church.
Those looking to continue their education should take advantage of one of the schools in Sumter County. Georgia Southwestern State University is an accredited four-year school that offers many bachelor degree programs. Georgia Southwestern contains schools of arts and sciences, business administration, education, nursing, computing and mathematics, and caregiving. South Georgia Technical College provides several options for associate degrees and other courses.
The Georgia Veterans State Park and several Veterans Services offices are located near Sumter County. Disabled veterans may be eligible for property tax exemption. The median household income is $33,796, and the median housing cost is $90,300.
