Spread out over 547 square miles of land, and located in the central portion of Florida, Sumter County is distinguishable as having the oldest median age of any county in the United States. The total population of the county is roughly 93,000. Bushnell serves as the county seat and The Villages is the largest community. Unique when compared to most American counties, The Villages is a high end retirement destination for many reasons. Golf, fishing, and swimming are all high accessible, and the unincorporated community is paradise for residents who live without a car. Residents can get anywhere within the Villages in a golf cart. The county has five operational library branches, and perhaps the most popular activity among locals is Hog hunting. Home to a sizeable population of Wild Hogs, the County is unofficially nicknamed “Hog County.”
Sumter County was originally formed in January of 1853. Named after Revolutionary War hero Thomas Sumter, the county continues to espouse the ideals of the famed general. Adjacent to Marion County, Lake County, Polk County, Pasco County, Citrus County and Hernando County, Sumter encompasses the area called “The Crossroads of Florida” because of its central location.
