Named for Alexander Andreyevich Baranov, the Baranof Island lies in the Northern archipelago in the Alaska Panhandle. The vast majority of the Island is encompassed by the borough and city of Sitka. More than 10,000 years ago the Tlingit people took up residence in Sitka. In 1799 with the arrival of Russian settlers, the Tlingit were forced out of Fort Sitka. In 1808, Sitka was established as the capital of Russian America. A valuable port, the area, was known as the “Paris of the Pacific” during the nineteenth century. In fact, the Alaska purchase was signed in Sitka.
Following the purchase of Alaska by the United States, Sitka experienced a period of growth influenced by fish canning and gold mining. The coast guard station functions as a search and rescue service, to enforce maritime law and to conduct environmental surveillance patrols.
The local economy is driven by the seafood industry, with 18 percent of the population working in this field. The borough is the sixth largest seafood harvest port in the entire country. The two largest employers are the South East Alaska Regional Health Consortium and the Sitka Public School District.
