From the Spanish word Cimarron, meaning wild one, the name Seminole was given to the group of Native American tribes who migrated from South Carolina into lower Florida. Seminole nation consisted of Creek, Choctaw and Muscogee tribes who intermingled, forming one greater group. Seminole nation largely impacted eighteenth and nineteenth century Florida. Although today, the majority of the tribe has relocated to Oklahoma; its legacy is honored by the county bearing the same name. Located on the central-eastern coast of Florida, Seminole County was formed in 1913. One of the last counties, to form in the state, the land belonging to Seminole County, was originally part of Orange County. Containing a total area of 345 square miles, of which 309 miles is land, Seminole County is the third smallest county by area in the state. The county encompasses seven incorporated cities. Sanford is both the county seat and the largest city. Situated between Volusia and Orange County, and part of the Greater Metropolitan Area of Orlando, Seminole County has been one of the quickest growing counties in the state in recent years.
A port city, Sanford is unofficially nicknamed the “historic waterfront gateway city.” In the proximity of Disney World, the local economy is primarily based on tourism. As such, many attractions are found in the county, including the Central Florida Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Central Florida Soapbox Derby and the Riverwalk Trail. Seminole State College of Florida is also located in Sanford.

Veterans in Seminole County
Seminole County has a veteran population of just under 30,000 residents. The county has a long tradition of honoring the United States military. This is most evident during the annual Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony. The yearly festival occurs in Sanford, with the parade led by a variety of veteran organizations, Color Guards, and military vehicles. The route of the parade starts in the city’s historic downtown section and Lake Monroe. Additionally, Warriors Memorial at Memorial Park near Lake Nona functions as a reminder of the sacrifice made by countless men and women throughout our nation’s history, with a registry of all of the fallen veterans of Seminole County since the First World War.
The Veterans’ Services Office in Sanford aids the local veteran community through trained officers, certified by the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs. These officers work with former military members, surviving spouses, and dependents, to educate them in regards to available benefits and claim filing. If circumstances prevent a veteran from coming into the office, the department will conduct outreach.
In terms of health and wellness, the closest VA medical facility is the Orland VA Medical Center, which provides a range of care, including primary, specialty and surgical.
Veteran homeowners in Seminole County may qualify for a property tax exemption, depending on their disability status. Veterans with a disability rating of ten percent or higher are entitled to an exemption of $5,000. Veterans with total disability qualify for a complete exemption.
