Putnam County was named after a hero of the French and Indian War, Israel Putnam. Israel Putnam was also a general in the American Revolutionary War. Located in the center of Georgia, Putnam County was officially created by the Georgia General Assembly on December 10, 1807. The county is in proximity to Lake Oconee, giving it plenty of opportunity for aquatic activities. Within driving distance of Putnam County, are the North Georgia Mountains. The famous Dairy Festival is held in Putnam County. The Festival celebrates one of the largest industries in Putnam County. Several events are held during the Dairy Festival, including a Tractor Show, Torture Trail Road Race, and even a parade! There is also an annual beauty pageant held at the Dairy Festival, called the Dairy Festival Queen Pageant. The festival also has a multitude of vendor booths, including arts and crafts, food, and non-profit vendors. Children will enjoy all of the rides at the Dairy Festival.
There is a thriving school system in Putnam County, featuring one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. The high school often hosts sporting events that bring out much of the community. Putnam County also has a fully-functioning hospital called Putnam General Hospital.
