Formerly nicknamed the “Beehive of Industry”, Providence County in recent years has rebranded itself as the “Creative Capital.” With a population of 626,667, Providence County is the most populous area of Rhode Island. The county no longer has an official seat; the largest city of Providence is also the state’s capital. Providence is the third largest city in New England behind Boston and Worcester. Providence is a portion of the 37th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Part of the Greater Boston Commuting area, the city, is located at the head of Narragansett Bay and the mouth of the Providence River. Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, founded Providence in 1636, making the city one of the oldest in the country. With a booming silverware, and jewelry industry Providence has a rich industrial history. The city contains eight hospitals, seven institutions of higher learning, and has thus brought about an economic shift from manufacturing to service, although the city still maintains a robust manufacturing segment.
A noted tourist draw, Providence has a great nightlife scene, numerous parks, quirky neighborhoods, and unique shopping offerings. Many museums, restaurants, and distinctive architecture make Providence unlike much of New England.
The county also contains notable cities like Woonsocket and Pawtucket. Pawtucket is famous for being home of the Paw Sox, a minor league baseball team, and Woonsocket, the site of the corporate headquarters of CVS Health.
