Make your new home Pope County, which is located on the southern edge of Illinois. The county was created from portions of Johnson and Gallatin Counties in 1816. Pope County was named after Nathaniel Pope, who was the former Secretary of Illinois. With a total population of 4,276, including a veteran population of 435, Pope County is the second least populated county in Illinois. Once the site of a prehistoric city, the Kincaid Mounds State Historic Site is a great place to learn about the history of Illinois. There are 11 mounds at the Historic Site, which were once used as places for Native American Tribes to build their homes. Another significant historic site in Pope County is the Millstone Bluff. The Millstone Bluff is home to the Woodland stone fort, a rock art site, and a prehistoric stone box cemetery.
