Petersburg Borough located in Southeastern Alaska has a fishing history that dates back over a thousand years. Carbon dated Tlingit fishing traps and petroglyphs demonstrating the act of fishing have confirmed this time estimate. Since the Alaska Purchase, fisheries have played a major role in the area. In the 1960’s Icicle Seafoods was established as a community mainstay. The top commercial fishing harvesters of the area distribute over a million dollars worth of seafood annually.
