Facts about Pershing County Nevada

John Joseph ‘Black Jack’ Pershing was very much a man who liked to do things his way. During World War I, Prior to American engagement, Pershing led an American expeditionary force in Europe. Defying the logic of European military leaders who wanted the Americans amalgamated into smaller European units, Pershing established an independent force of American troops, to be commanded by American officers. So it should come as no surprise that the physical features of Pershing County defy the norm. Ironically, despite being located in the center of the state, the county contains more water per square mile than any other Nevada county. With a historical marker at the Lovelock courthouse, the county is recognized as Nevada Historical Marker 17. Separated from Humboldt County  in 1919, Pershing County is special to the state because it was the very last county formed in Nevada. Homes in Pershing County have a distinct “country meets suburban” appearance. The average price per square foot is around $100. There are many mobile and manufactured homes that have been developed in recent decades, offering spacious bedrooms and modern kitchens and baths. Older homes that were built around the turn of the century are often classic log cabins, including custom built-ins such as pellet or wood burning stoves and hand carved shelving. Fewer rental units can be found in Pershing County than other surrounding areas. The economy of Pershing County is largely driven by tourism with the annual Burning Man festival happening in the Black Rock Desert. Among the biggest employers in the county is the prison in Lovelock.
