Okaloosa County is situated in the northwestern section of Florida, along the Panhandle. On the border of Alabama, Okaloosa County is adjacent to only two other Florida Counties; Santa Rosa and Walton Counties. The county was established in June of 1915, and its name is taken from a Choctaw Word. Okaloosa in the Choctaw language translates to “black water.” The county has a total area of 1,082 square miles and partially encompasses the national protected areas of Choctawhatchee National Forest and Gulf Islands National Seashore. In addition to preserving the natural and historic resources along the Gulf of Mexico barrier islands, the Gulf Islands National Seashore provides residents with numerous recreational opportunities. The two developed campgrounds located along the National Seashore are popular destinations among locals.
The largest community in the county is Wright, and the county seat is Crestview. The total population of Okaloosa County is roughly 180,000. Among the more popular entertainment options in the area are the Gulfarium Sea Adventure Park in Walton Beach, the Indian Temple Mound Museum and the Air Armament Museum. The county holds the Billy Bowlegs Festival, a street party and celebration with a pirate theme annually in June.

Veterans in Okaloosa County
Okaloosa County has a reputation as extremely military friendly. Two active military bases operate within Okaloosa. Eglin Air Force Base in Valparaiso serves as a census-designated place with a population of over 8,000. The base has 2,400 military family housing units. The major units, that operate out of Eglin Air Force Base, are the 96th Test Wing, the 33rd Fighter Wing, The 58th Fighter Squadron, VMFAT -501, VFA -101, and the 53d Wing. The base functions as both a high-level training facility and worldwide air support deployment site.
Hurlburt Field Air Force Base in Mary Esther is the headquarters of Air Force Special Operations Command and the 1st Special Operations Wing. Technically an offshoot of Eglin AFB, Hurlburt Field provides housing to service- members of Eglin. The site has 680 military housing units and stations 7,800 active duty personnel.
Duke Field can also be found in Okaloosa County. Three miles from the business district of Crestview, Duke Field operates as a military airport. Technically falling under the umbrella of Eglin Air Force Base, the facility has taken on the role of Air Force Reserve Command installation in recent years.
In addition to the active military members, Okaloosa County is home to more than 32,000 former military members. The Veterans Service Office of Okaloosa County functions to improve access to veterans for services. The department assists veterans with benefits and entitlements counseling as well as providing transportation to the VA Outpatient Clinic in Pensacola, which serves Okaloosa County.
Disabled veterans, who own property in Okaloosa County, are entitled to a property tax exemption if they have a disability rating of ten percent or greater. Under this circumstance, the exemption amounts to $5,000. If a veteran suffers from a total disability (100 percent rating), they qualify for a full exemption.
