Located in Southeastern Connecticut, New London County is known as a center for military activity in the state as well as for its robust gaming industry. Four of the five Native American reservations in Connecticut are located in New London County. Offering more adult-themed entertainment options than the other seven counties in the state, the reservations are big tourist draws because they operate casinos. Casinos include Foxwoods Resort, Mohegan Sun and the MGM Grand at Foxwoods. One of the four original counties of the state, New London County, was formed in 1666. Historically the area was dominated by the Pequot people, although by the time of settlement the Pequot had been largely usurped of regional power as a result of the combined effort of the English and their Narragansett and Mohegan allies. Originally the county was made up by the towns of Stonington, Norwich, New London, and Saybrook. Present day county borders were established in 1881.

Venues for entertainment and fun in the county include the Connecticut College Arboretum which boasts a rare collection of plants; The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, the Garde Arts Center which is a resptred vaudeville theater and the Hempstead Houses. Ocean Beach Park in the city of New London has a beach, boardwalk, waterslide, arcade, mini-golf, nature walk and playground. The El N Gee Club also in the city of New London is famous as a musical venue. The club has been operational since the 1970s.

Roughly 25,000 veterans reside in New London County. Additionally, New London County is the home of all four of Connecticut’s military bases, giving it the highest number of active duty residents. The county contains three Coast Guard Bases: Coast Guard Academy, Marine Safety Center Marine Base, Research and Development Center Coast Guard and Naval Submarine Base New London. Bases are situated in the city of the New London and City of Groton.
