Located in Northern Florida, on the Georgia border, Nassau County was originally settled by the Native American Timucuan mound building tribe in approximately the year 1000. The first Europeans to travel through Nassau County were led by the French explorer Jean Ribault. Nicknamed the “Isle of 8 Flags”, the early colonial history of Nassau County is unique because representatives of eight separate governments or factions laid claim to Fernandina Beach, at one time or another raising their flag. France was expelled by Spain; the area was ceded to the British and then receded to Spanish. The Spanish were pushed out by a group known as the Latin American Patriots, who in turn were forced to withdraw from the area because of Mexican Rebels. The American Navy fought off the rebels and laid claim to the region as American. During the Civil War, the county flew the Confederate flag. The American flag, as it is commissioned today, had flown in Nassau County since 1862 when 28 gunboats commanded by the Union Army took Fernandina Beach. Known for liberty, the first all-black regiment of former slaves was emancipated in Fernandina.
Nassau County has a population of 73,314. Established as an American county in 1824, the land of the area originally belonged to Duval County. The county is named after the Duchy of Nassau in Germany, an independent state in Western Europe between 1806 and 1866. The County Seat is Fernandina Beach and the largest residential populous is in Census Designated Yulee. The county has a year round sunny climate. Summers are long and warm, and winters are short and mild. The County is in a convenient location, Jacksonville is close by, with the Jacksonville International Airport only a 30-minute drive away. The proximity to the city provides an urban backdrop and accessible amenities.
Popular entertainment activities in Nassau County include Golf and the numerous public and private courses; boating and fishing, the Amelia Island Museum of History, and the Big Talbot State Park. The county also has a growing performing arts community, with performances throughout the year taking place at the Amelia Community Theatre and the Fernandina Little Theatre.
