The Georgia General Assembly officially created Murray County in December 1832. Located on the Northern edge of Georgia, Murray County was named for member of the Georgia House of Representatives, Thomas Walton Murray. Murray was created from portions of Whitfield, Walker, Catoosa, and Dade counties. The county is known for its eclectic towns and spectacular views of the mountains. Other annual events in Murray County include Chatsworth Scarecrow Mania, the North Georgia Mountain Christmas Parade, and the 5K Fun Run.
Those that love the wilderness are sure to enjoy the Cohutta Wilderness Area. Cohutta is home to a diversity of wildlife, including black bear, whitetail deer, wild boar, and turkey. There are also excellent fishing opportunities in Cohutta thanks to all of the native trout swimming in the rivers. There are over 16 hiking trails that total around 90 miles!
