The Georgia General Assembly officially created Murray County in December 1832. Located on the Northern edge of Georgia, Murray County was named for member of the Georgia House of Representatives, Thomas Walton Murray. Murray was created from portions of Whitfield, Walker, Catoosa, and Dade counties. The county is known for its eclectic towns and spectacular views of the mountains. The current population of Murray County is 39,410, including a veteran population 2,122.
Carters Lake is one of the best places in Georgia to see the mountains. The lake is located at the Southern end of the Appalachian Mountains. Carters Lake has amazingly clear waters and the opportunity for aquatic activities is endless. Other activities popular near Carters Lake include hiking, mountain, biking, and boating. The lake has several boat ramps, picnic areas, and campgrounds.
Another great place to enjoy the outdoors in Murray County is Fort Mountain State Park. Fort Mountain is home to an ancient wall that stands at 855 feet and is located on the highest point of the mountain. Hikers will love the beautiful trails that can be found at Fort Mountain. The trails are excellent locations to take in the scenery and study the diverse wildlife. Many campsites and cabin rentals are also available at the park.
The Black Bear Festival is one of the many exciting events held in Murray County during the year. The Black Bear Festival features a 5K run, an automobile show, a baking contest, a costume contest, and much more! There are also many vendors with great-tasting food and fun arts and crafts. Other annual events in Murray County include Chatsworth Scarecrow Mania, the North Georgia Mountain Christmas Parade, and the 5K Fun Run.
Those that love the wilderness are sure to enjoy the Cohutta Wilderness Area. Cohutta is home to a diversity of wildlife, including black bear, whitetail deer, wild boar, and turkey. There are also excellent fishing opportunities in Cohutta thanks to all of the native trout swimming in the rivers. There are over 16 hiking trails that total around 90 miles!

For everything from quick cafes to fancy steakhouses, you are sure to find the perfect restaurant for the perfect evening in Murray County. There is also plenty of shopping opportunities in the downtown area.
