About Morrow County

Created from parts of Umatilla county in 1885, Morrow County, Oregon was named in honor of Jackson L. Morrow, a member of the state legislature at the time of the county’s establishment. The county seat was elected in 1886 and was named Standsbury Flat after George W. Stansbury, one of the first white settlers in the area. Eventually, the name was changed to Heppner in 1873, in Honor of Henry Heppner who cofounded a store in town.

Today, the county’s economy depends on its agriculture, food processing, lumber, livestock, and recreation. However, the biggest employment industries are agriculture, manufacturing, and accommodation. Hence, farming, forestry, management, and administrative support are the most common occupations for residents.

The county created the Eastern Oregon Development Fund through its Morrow Development Corporation. The purpose of the program is to create, maintain, and develop employment opportunities for residents of the county. In addition, the program offers up to $500,000, which can be used for purchasing land, equipment, transportation, and construction, for qualifying businesses.

Educationally speaking, the county is served by the Morrow County School District which serves about 2,265 students K-12 annually. The student-teacher ratio is 18 to 1 which allows for a more personalized learning and teaching experience.

Finally, the county is also home to beautiful natural scenery with the Blue Mountains, Umatilla national forest, the Oregon Trail, and the Lewis and Clark Route. Morrow county is also host to several annual events like the “A Wee Bit O’Ireland” Saint Patrick’s Day and the Blue Mountain Century Bikeway, which is a scenic ride loop of about 108 miles beginning and ending in the city of Heppner.
