Miami-Dade County has a population of 2,496,435. The County has the greatest number of residents, and the land area of 1,946 square miles makes it the third largest by geographical size in the state of Florida. Miami-Dade County is the most populous county in the state of Florida, the total number of veteran residents in the area reflects this. Nearly 60,000 veterans make their home in the county. Local veterans have access to numerous service providers throughout Miami-Dade, with the City of Miami being the center of these facilities. The Miami VA Healthcare System serves Monroe County and Broward County in addition to Miami-Dade County. This system operates five Community Based Outpatient Clinics, Three Readjustment Counseling Centers, and two satellite facilities. The main facility has 432 hospital beds and a four-story center for the living. The Miami VA Healthcare System provides inpatient and outpatient wellness services including surgical and general medical. The center has been previously recognized as a “center for excellence” in regards to its substance abuse treatment and research in the field of spinal cord injuries.
Miami also has a Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Clinic and Vet Center. The US Coast Guard Group Miami functions as an intake site for pre-discharge claims assistance. The Veterans Services Program offered by the county government provides further benefits and claims guidance.
Miami-Dade County has a large active duty population as well, resulting from the presence of two military bases that operate within the county limits. Both facilities are Coast Guard Bases. Integrated Support Command Miami, situated in Miami Beach houses active duty and reserve personnel. The tenets of this facility are to enforce federal laws, conduct search and rescue operations and to provide security of the coastal area and nearby waterways. The United States Coast Guard Seventh District in Miami conducts defensive operations in Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia. The main task of this facility is to control the illegal flow of drug traffic.
