Merrimack County is notable for the city of Concord, which is the state capital of New Hampshire. The county has a population of 146,445 and is the third largest county in land area in the state. Formed in 1823 from portions of Hillsborough and Rockingham Counties, it was named after the Merrimack River. The area of the County was originally settled by Abenaki and Pennacook Indians thousands of years prior to European settlement. The County has a humid continental climate, meaning the weather is characterized by long, cold, snowy winters, and humid summers. Merrimack experiences all four distinct seasons, although autumn and spring are the two shortest of the seasons.
Concord is known for its quality food offerings, quaint shops and bookstores, and fun entertainment venues. The Capital Center for the Arts and the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium. Additionally the Beaver Meadow Golf Course is one of the premier greens in the state, and the Concord Trail System promises great hiking. The county encompasses the entirety of the John Hay National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge was established as a migratory bird conservation area.

Veterans in Merrimack County
Merrimack County has the third largest veteran population in the state of New Hampshire. Nearly 13,000 former military members live in the county. Veterans who own property in Merrimack County qualify for a property tax exemption or property tax credits under certain circumstances. Veterans who served at least 90 days during a time of war are eligible for a tax credit of $50. The surviving spouse of a veteran killed while on active duty can qualify for a tax credit of $700 to $2,000. Additionally, disabled veterans qualify for a $700 credit is they suffer from permanent, service-connected paraplegia, blindness or double amputation. If a disabled veteran occupies a home that was specially adapted by The Department of Veterans Affairs, they are entitled to a complete property tax exemption.
The veteran population of Merrimack County has access to the Hooksett Vet Center. Open Monday through Friday, the vet center provides readjustment counseling to veterans suffering from trauma-related distress. The center specializes in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and substance abuse related issues.
The New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery is located in Boscawen. Established in 1997, the cemetery covers 14 acres of burial sites. The first cemetery on the east coast to allow for the interment of out of state veterans, the cemetery honors vets with a proud and dignified burial. The cemetery’s first internment was of Ernest Holm, who served during both WWI and WWII. On the same day, Hilda, Ernest’s wife was also interred.

Annually, the National Guard Hangar in Concord is the site of the annual “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.” The event honors veterans living in the state who served during the Vietnam War.
