The Matanuska-Susitna Borough came into National Prominence in 2008 when the public learned that then Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin was at the time the Mayor of Wasilla, the largest city in the borough and one of the largest in Alaska. Part of the Anchorage metropolitan area, the borough is home to 95,192 residents. Although Wasilla is the biggest city in the borough, Palmer enjoys its status as the borough seat. The original inhabitants of the area were the Dena’ina, Ahtna and Athabaskans, native tribes known for their subsistence and trade lifestyles. With World War I, the area became a vital provider of coal to the rest of the country. Because of the presence of coal fields near Palmer, coal miners began populating the area, leading to a population boom.
Located in southern Alaska, the area has become a hub for residents who work in Anchorage but do not wish to live in the city. The borough economy now primarily consists of agriculture. Known as the farming capital of Alaska, because of the glacial soil, growing conditions in Matanuska-Susitna are ideal. Among the many vegetables grown locally are cauliflower, kale, collards, radishes, brussel-sprouts, rutabagas and turnips, among many others. At the 2012 Alaska State fair, the borough set the record for the heaviest cabbage on record with a weight of 138.25 pounds.
Fun activities permeate throughout the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, including numerous hiking trails, the Brett Memorial Ice Arena, Matanuska River Park, and a number of lakes and fields. For outdoor activities there is the Alcantra Sports Complex amd Trail System, Christiansen Lake, Fish Creek Park, Jordan Lake Park, and Wild Woods Park. Skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, salmon fishing, rafting, and canoeing are all popular among the locals.
