On December 5, 1811, Madison County was officially created by the Georgia State Legislature. Named for President James Madison, Madison County was the 38th county created in Georgia. The county was named from portions of Clarke, Elbert, Franklin, Jackson, and Oglethorpe Counties. Madison County has a strong agricultural industry and a rich history that can be seen in the Nationally Registered Historic Places located throughout the county. The current population is 28,312, and the veteran population is 1,787.
The site of the longest covered bridge in Georgia, Watson Mill Bridge State Park, is located in Madison County. The bridge spans 229 feet and crosses the South Fork of the Broad River. The park is 1,018 acres and contains a hiking and horseback riding trail. The trail is an excellent place to take in the scenic views of Madison County. For those that love camping, there are 21 tent/RV sites and three pioneer camping sites. There is also a group shelter and three picnic shelters.
Sammy A. Haggard Park is the largest park in Madison County. The park contains five baseball fields, a football field, and a quarter mile jogging/hiking track. There are also several batting cages, four tennis courts, three pavilions, and two playgrounds located in the park. Sammy A. The Broad River is located in eastern Madison County. The river is a great place to go fishing or boating. The Watson Bill Bridge State Park even offers daily boat rentals. Other recreation areas include Hartwell Reservoir and Clark Hill Reservoir.
Madison County has a strong school system, which includes several elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and two private schools. Golf lovers will enjoy Eagle Green’s Sandy Creek Golf Course. The course features an 18-hole course, golf cart rental, and a pro shop.
Madison County has several locations on the National Register of Historic Places. The Madison County Courthouse was built in 1901 and remains in Danielsville, Ga. The third oldest church in Georgia, New Hope Presbyterian Church, was built in 1788.
Charlie Norwood VA Medical Centers is located in Athens, Ga., which is just a short drive from Madison County. There is also a Veterans Service Office, VA Athens Clinic, and the Oconee Veterans Memorial located nearby. Disabled veterans may be eligible for property tax exemption.
