Located just off of the Florida Panhandle, Madison County is along the states border of Georgia. Madison County is adjacent to seven counties, two of which are in Georgia (Brooks and Lowndes Counties). The county is fairly small by size and population in comparison to the other 67 counties of the state. Madison County is spread across 716 total square miles, 220 of which is water. Containing only one incorporated city, and two incorporated townships, the population of Madison County is 19,224. Beyond Madison, Greenville and Lee, county residents live in 10 unincorporated communities. Both the largest city and county seat of the county is Madison. Despite a population of less than 4,000, the city of Madison is a Florida athletic powerhouse and is represented in the National Football League by three active players. Additionally, Greenville Township is noted as being the hometown of iconic Rhythm and Blues Musician Ray Charles. Despite the small size of Madison it maintains a police department of 14 employees and fire department of nine employees. The humid subtropical climate of the county is relatively favorable with humid summers and mild winters. Transportation throughout the county is made easier by the presence of two railroad lines. Amtrak’s Sunset Limited line runs through the county as does the Georgia and Florida Railway. The Suwannee River Regional Library System operates one of its branches in Madison.

The county was founded in December of 1827 and was named after the fourth American President James Madison, who served the office from 1809 thru 1817.

Veterans in Madison County

Because Madison County has a relatively small civilian population, it should come as no surprise that only 1,800 veterans make their permanent residence in the area. Despite the small size of the county, veteran services are still offered. Madison Township is the site of the only American Legion Post in the entire county. The American Legion maintains a mission of improving the well-being of local veterans, combating veteran homelessness, and promoting national security, and patriotism. The Madison County Office of Veteran Services provides local veterans with entitlement guidance and benefits assistance. This office holds office hours Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Office Hours are held in Madison Monday, Thursday, and Friday and in Monticello in Jefferson County on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Veterans who own property in Madison County and who have a 10 percent or greater disability rating qualify for a real estate tax exemption of $5,000 while those with a 100 percent rating are entitled to a full exemption.
