Macon County was the 91st county created by the Georgia State Legislature. Made from portions of Houston and Marion Counties, Macon County was officially created on December 14, 1837. The county was named for General Nathaniel Macon, who served in the U.S. Congress for 37 years. Macon County has many resources for outdoor lovers, including several parks and recreation centers. The Andersonville National Cemetery is located at the Historic Site, where the graves of over 13,000 Union soldiers can be seen. The Andersonville National Historic Site also contains the Nation Prisoner of War Museum, which serves as a memorial the all American prisoners of war. Exhibits in the museum showcase the conditions POWs had to endure.

Macon County is one of the locations featured on the popular television programs, The Walking Dead. Some locations in Macon County were used while shooting The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
