Brigadier general Nathaniel Lyon is known as the first Union general to be killed during the Civil War. At the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, Lyon led a badly outnumbered force of Union troops, successfully preventing the state of Missouri from Joining the Confederacy. Lyon lost his life during this engagement. For his selfless actions and valiant sacrifice, Lyon County was named in his honor.
