Brigadier general Nathaniel Lyon is known as the first Union general to be killed during the Civil War. Lyon lost his life during this engagement. For his selfless actions and valiant sacrifice, Lyon County was named in his honor.

Established in 1861, Lyon County is one of the original nine counties of Nevada. Known for its ghost towns, scenic hiking trails and its place in our country’s’ transcontinental railroad lore, Lyon County boasts a population of about 52,000 (according to the most recent census). The number of residents inhabiting the county has steadily increased over the previous decade. In relation to its size, Lyon County has a far greater population per square mile than the majority of counties located in Nevada. Most county residents live in close proximity to Carson City, perhaps resulting from the state capitals’expanding popularity.

Lyon County has recently moved forward with what is known as its “Master Plan” to accommodate expected population growth. This plan includes provisions for additional housing, government and social services and the implementation of concepts that promote sustainable growth. Population spurts need to be kept at maintainable levels so that the median income and housing prices remain in line with national averages. Currently, an abundance of employment opportunities exist for civilians and military specialists. Vocational options coupled with a host of recreational activities ensure that residents enjoy a high standard of living as well as a healthy work-life balance.
