What to expect in Lincoln County

In 1866, following the creation of new Nevada state lines, Lincoln County was established. Prior to July of 1908, the county contained the entirety of what is now Clark County, including Las Vegas. Because of the mythology surrounding Area 51, many misconceptions about Lincoln County exist, especially pertaining to homeownership and prospective population growth. While it is true that much of the land is considered government territory and is thus restricted, there is still an abundance of space for existing home sites. Furthermore, a diverse array of property is prominent throughout the county, housing ranges from modest yards to rolling estates.

With population growth on the horizon, planned communities are currently in the development phase. These communities are expected to bring in more than 200,000 new residents to the area. The current median home price is slightly below the national average and can include townhomes or single family homes within the same development.

Lincoln County is best known for Area 51

Areal 51

At the forefront of the general public’s mind, when it comes to Lincoln County, is Area 51. The supposed site of an extraterrestrial cover-up, Area 51, in actuality is a state of the art training center for the United States Air Force. The open spaces, flat land, clear sky and limited population make this the ideal location for training exercises. As a training center, this is among the most respected in the entire world. Moreover, Area 51 functions as the perfect place to test high-tech aircraft and other loud machinery that would be a disruption in densely populated areas. A Varied and unforgiving landscape is the cornerstone of Lincoln County because it makes the routine physical and tactical training exercises conducted in the area possible.

The support system for veterans living in Lincoln County is further strengthened by the presence of a local VFW in Caliente.

Additionally beneficial to local vets is the availability of tax exemptions for residents with wartime service. These exemptions can be used by the service member for either vehicle privilege tax or property tax (up to the discretion of the veteran, cannot be used for both). Lincoln County residents interested in their exact exemption rate should contact the county assessor’s office.

Furthermore, disabled veterans and the widows of disabled veterans who received their disability in relation to their service qualify for a property tax exemption of up to 60 percent or more.
