Located along the coast of Florida, Levy County was established in 1845. Named for David Levy, a planter turned politician. Levy was elected in 1841 as the Florida territorial delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives. One of the first two state senators of Florida, Levy is recognized as the first Jewish American elected to the United States Senate. Nicknamed the “fire eater and the “father of Florida’s railroads”, Levy is a contentious character in the history of Florida for his staunch support of the institution of slavery, his nine-month imprisonment and for his sale of the states railroad.

The county was established following the conclusion of the Seminole Wars; the development of the Florida Railroad which ran thru Cedar Key led to a countywide population increase. Today, the county has a resident populous of 41,000. Spread out over 1,413 square miles of area the county has two National protected areas, the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge and the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge. Both areas offer much in the way of tourist activities via wildlife observation, photography, and fishing, canoeing and hunting. The Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge is noted for the sturgeon, deer, turkey, bald eagles, and manatees. Other destinations for locals and tourists, to take advantage of in the county, are the Cedar Key State Museum and Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve. The museum has a vast collection of Indian artifacts and sea shells, as well as a scenic nature trail. The Scrub State Reserve us a state park that has a picnic area, tables and grill space and has a picturesque outdoor backdrop. Renowned for its seafood, views of the Gulf and annual festivals, the County is often described as relaxing, sleepy and quaint. Despite these designations, there is never a shortage of activities.
