Located along the Florida Panhandle, Leon County is named for the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. Famous as the first European to explore Flordia, Ponce de Leon navigated Florida during the early sixteenth century. Established in 1824, Leon County was a prominent plantation county prior to the abolition of slavery. In the decade leading up to the Civil War, Leon County was considered a “cotton kingdom” producing more cotton than all but five counties in the Georiga-Florida area. Covering over 700 square miles, the land belonging to Leon County was originally part Gadsden and Escambia counties. The population of the county is roughly 275,000. The largest city and county seat is Tallahassee. The county is famous as the site of Florida’s most prestigious universities, Florida A&M University, and Florida State University. The residents of Leon County take great pride in this and are noted as having the highest level of education on average out of all 67 counties in the state. Containing the Apalachicola National Forest, the County was the recipient of the 2007 National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials Environmental and Conservation Award. The award was given as a result of Leon County putting for an “exceptional effort to reclaim, restore, preserve, acquire or develop unique natural areas. A Democratic stronghold in a fairly Republican state, the county has voted majority Democratic in every presidential election dating back to 1992.
The county seat of Tallahassee is also the capital city of the state. The city has a population of 181,000. Despite its relatively small size, Tallahassee has a multitude of entertainment venues. Popular activities include the Tallahassee Skate Park, Lake Ella, and the Maclay Gardens. The city has a few prominent museums such as the Old State Capital Museum, the Tallahassee Automobile Museum and the Museum of History and Natural Science. The city is also known for its vibrant artistic scene.

Veterans in Leon County
The veteran population of Leon County exceeds 18,000. Local vets have access to many governmental services from multiple outlets. The Office of Veterans Services in Tallahassee provides county veterans with benefits claim processing, and entitlement counseling. A referral service, the Office of Veterans Services partners with numerous other veterans’ organizations to expand the scope and reach of services they provide; among the organizations that work with the Office are the American Red Cross, the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs and the Florida State University Collegiate Veterans Association. Tallahassee is also home to the Tallahassee Vet Center, which holds office hours from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. throughout the week. Health and wellness services are offered at the Tallahassee Outpatient Clinic. The clinic provides a broad range of healthcare that includes nursing, dental, medical, surgical and psychiatric. Veterans, who require specialty care that is not offered at this clinic, are referred to the VA Medical Center in Alachua County.
