Located in the virtual center of Florida, Lake County was created in 1887. Formed from portions of Sumter and Orange Counties, Lake County is named for the nearly 1,400 lakes in the surrounding area. The highest point in peninsular Florida, known as Sugarloaf Mountain is found in Lake County. The mountain elevates to 312 feet above sea level. The mountain is renowned for its cultural, scenic and historical merit. The population of the county is almost 300,000. The largest city is Clermont, and the county seat is Tavares. Clermont is the site of the Florida Citrus Tower; a 225 foot tall structure considered the most recognizable landmark in the Greater Orlando Area. Residents are fairly split politically, however the county on the whole leans towards the conservative end. In the previous four presidential election cycles, the county has voted majority Republican.
Home to numerous schools, residents of the county take pride in the many academic offerings. Lake-Sumter State College and Beacon College are both located in the County. The Lake County Library system has 15 individual branches dispersed throughout the county.
The Leesburg International Airport is on the site of a former military airfield. Located along Lake Haris, this airport is used by U.S Customs, and Border Patrol and the Department of Homeland Security, in addition to commercial usage. Almost 200 aircraft are based out of the Leesburg International Airport.

Lake County has a sizeable veteran population of nearly 32,000. Local veteran residents are provided with advocacy, vocational training benefits counseling and other services by the Lake County Veterans Services Office.
