The county was once densely inhabited by the Anasazi Native American Tribe. La Plata County is the location of a large archeological site, because of the rich Anasazi history it possesses.
The Durango Rock Shelters Archeology Site is the location of a large number of artifacts from Anasazi culture. The Anasazi Native Americans are said to have inhabited La Plata County from AD 0 to AD 1000. The Archeology Site was first excavated in 1839. It is the first site where people found artifacts of early Basketmakers with house structures. The archeological sites in La Plata County are some of the most well preserved in the United States.
La Plata County offers a multitude of nature trails perfect for both beginners and experienced hikers. One of the more popular trails for beginners is the Animas River Trail. The Animas River Trail is completely paved and runs along the Animas River. Experienced hikers may want to try the Worlds Trail, located at the base of the Durango Mountain Resort. It is a seven mile loop that mixes short steep climbs and long gradual uphills.
Mesa Verde is also an excellent spot to discover the rich history of La Plata County. Mesa Verde is the former home of an entire tribe of Anasazi Native Americans. The site features ancient houses and cliff dwellings. Other monuments worth seeing in La Plata County include the Aztec Ruins, Chimney Rock, Chaco Canyon, and Hovenweep.
La Plata is the perfect place to experience winter recreation. The county offers a number of great mountain resorts and hot springs. Ice climbing, snow tubing, and cross country skiing are all activities that one can experience in La Plata County.
La Plata County has a population of 53,989 residents, with a veteran population of 3,963. The median household income is $58,080, and the median housing cost is $339,400. Veterans are offered a large number of benefits and services, including property tax exemption for disabled veterans.
